Three signs that you may have Rosacea:

Redness:  This could look like a blush or sunburn.  It's caused by flushing (when a large amount of  blood rushes to the blood vessels just under the skin, and the vessels expand to handle the flow)  If this continues to happen, over time, the redness becomes more noticeable and does not go away.

Pimples:  Skin can become irritated and inflamed and pimples may appear on the face.  These pimples may be papules (small, red, and solid) or pustules (pus-filled, teenage acne).  This is why Rosacea is sometimes referred to as "Acne Rosacea."  Breakouts can show up on the butterfly area of the face (nose, upper cheeks, chin and in between eyes).

Broken or enlarged blood vessels:  When people with Rosacea flush, the small vessels on the face get larger- eventually showing through the skin.  Doctors call this telangiectasia and they may appear as spots or wavy lines.  Flushing, blushing, or redness may hide them, but they may become more visible as the underlying redness is cleared up by treatment.

Welcome to June!  It has been a long, dark winter.  Welcome to sunshine, warmer weather, boating, barbecues and hikes in our beautiful Pacific Northwest.  As you know, the lack of Vitamin D has taken a toll on many Bellingham  residents.  I would like to note that it is very important that as we move into summer months, we protect ourselves from harmful UVA and UVB sun rays.  You do not need a tan to get enough Vitamin D (most foods and supplements offer enough).

What is a tan? 
Sun tans are a symptom of damaged skin.  They are the result of ultraviolet radiation stimulating the melanocytes (cells in the top layers of the skin) to produce more melanin or pigment.  This is a natural defense of the skin to protect against UV.  However, while the melanin helps protect the skin, over exposure and repetitive exposure of the skin to the sun's rays or to tanning booth rays damages melanocytes and many other cell types in the skin.  This damage is cumulative and potentially irreversible, ultimately leading to premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.  Therefore, the tan you thought beautiful for a few days may lead to a lifetime of skin problems.
